Video of services for Deaf people in Brighton and Hove (2003)
Commissioned by the City Council and NHS; Supported by Brighton and Hove DEAF; Produced by Remark!
By John Walker
A video produced by the Brighton and Hove City's Council and NHS in 2003, the video was a product of a collaboration with the Brighton and Hove Deaf Equality and Access Forum. The video was a consequence of the BSL March.
The video was led by a collaboration between John Walker (DEAF), Martin Campbell (Primary Care Trust), Laura Scott-Smith (Council) and Hilary Fearn (South Downs NHS Trust).
The video was produced by Remark! and presented by Linda and Memnos.
Members of the community were engaged in this video, including: Ian Green, Parveen Dunlin, Nadia Dunlin, John Walker, Damian Brewer and Rachael Parker.
The idea of this video was to introduce local services to members of the Deaf community who did not have access to the same information in English. While it took over a year to make the video, it was already out of date within 18 months. There were plans to create a website alternative but the ever changing structures of the Council made the cost of the project prohibitive.
This video was a product of the campaigns of Brighton and Hove DEAF, who established a Deaf User Forum in the city, with some significant achievements; this perhaps may be one of them.
Please note that all details included in the video will now most probably be out of date and some services may no longer be offered or updated.
